Can you play The Godfather: The Game in your browser?

Partly. Play! gets The Godfather: The Game into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which The Godfather: The Game disc should you use?

The Play! tracker lists one disc for this game: the NTSC-U release, serial SLUS-21385, reported as In-game. It was tested on September 1, 2019, and the note says only that the game reaches gameplay with major visual issues. A later comment, from November 22, 2021, was written on an S21+ phone and said the major graphics issues remained on both OpenGL and Vulkan.

Nothing is listed for the PAL release, so there is no tracker evidence for it either way. If you are weighing options, the one reported disc is not marked Playable, and the visual problems are described as major on two different renderers. Because the tracker covers Play! on all platforms, a browser build could behave worse than these reports.

What testers reported for The Godfather: The Game

Notes from the volunteers who tested The Godfather: The Game on Play! and filed the tracker reports. They describe the emulator at the time of each test; newer builds may behave differently, and the browser version can perform worse than desktop.

How to play The Godfather: The Game in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of The Godfather: The Game. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-21385) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

The Godfather: The Game controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About The Godfather: The Game (PS2)

The Godfather is a 2006 open-world action-adventure from Electronic Arts, developed by EA Redwood Shores. It debuted that March on Windows, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and handheld and later-generation console editions came afterward. The Wikipedia infobox credits Page 44 Studios with the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Xbox versions. The game is built on the 1972 film, but its hero is an original character, Aldo Trapani, whom the player can rename. He is recruited into the Corleone family and climbs its ranks while seeking revenge on his father's killers.

His story crosses the film repeatedly, showing famous scenes from his perspective, such as driving Vito Corleone to the hospital. James Caan, Robert Duvall and Abe Vigoda voice characters from the movie. Marlon Brando recorded lines in what became his last acting job, but poor health made most of them unusable. Francis Ford Coppola condemned the project. Reviews were generally positive across most systems, with the PlayStation Portable version seen as weaker, and sales passed four million units. A follow-up built on the second film arrived in 2009.

How The Godfather: The Game plays

You explore a city freely in third person, commandeering vehicles and choosing how to approach missions. Much of the action is shooting, with a lock-on mode and a manual mode. Under lock-on, the reticle shrinks the longer you hold a target, and aiming at a knee, a shoulder or the groin of an enemy produces different effects, such as stopping him from running or from firing back. Close combat uses a system called BlackHand, which allows light, heavy and directional attacks, grabs, throws and execution moves once an enemy is weakened.

Extortion drives the economy. When you pressure a business owner, an on-screen meter fills toward a green bar and then a red one: stop in the green and the owner pays, but push past the red and he resists and pays nothing. Finding the owner's particular fear makes the payout grow faster. The map has five regions controlled by different families, and taking one over means extorting its businesses, seizing rackets, warehouses and hubs, and finally bombing the rival compound.

Two pressures push back. Vendetta rises as you take over rivals and kill their men, and when it gets too high a mob war starts, with rivals attacking you on sight. Heat rises when you shoot in public, kill civilians or attack police, and bribes can calm it. Rank advances only through story missions, while Respect earns skill points for improving attributes.
