Can you play Rule of Rose in your browser?

Partly. Play! gets Rule of Rose into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Rule of Rose disc should you use?

The Play! compatibility tracker lists two Rule of Rose discs, and both are marked In-game rather than Playable. The North American disc, SLUS-21448, was last tested on May 17, 2021, and the tester's note reads "In-game, saving/loading works." The European disc, SLES-54218, was tested on May 19, 2021, with the note "In-game, able to save/load properly."

Neither report names a specific known problem, so the two discs look equal on paper, and the tracker does not say what keeps them from the Playable status. It covers Play! across all platforms, so results in a browser may be worse than what is reported there. For choosing a disc, the tracker gives no reason to prefer one region over the other.

How to play Rule of Rose in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Rule of Rose. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-21448) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

Rule of Rose controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Rule of Rose (PS2)

Rule of Rose is a survival horror game for the PlayStation 2, developed by Punchline. Sony Computer Entertainment published it in Japan on January 19, 2006. Atlus USA brought it to North America on September 12, 2006, and 505 Games released it in Europe on November 3, 2006. Punchline started the project after Sony asked the studio for a horror title, and the team aimed for psychological horror built around childhood, drawing on Brothers Grimm fairy tales for the story and on the Silent Hill series for its graphics and art style.

The setting is Britain in 1930. Jennifer, a nineteen-year-old woman, ends up trapped in a world run by young girls who have organized themselves into a social hierarchy called the Red Crayon Aristocrats. According to Wikipedia, critics gave the game mixed reviews and aimed most of their complaints at the gameplay, and it was compared with Silent Hill and Haunting Ground because of its psychological horror and the dog that accompanies the heroine. Before its European release it was also the subject of a moral panic over rumors about its content, and the United Kingdom release was cancelled.

How Rule of Rose plays

You guide Jennifer through the game's environments and push the story forward by completing tasks, with enemies and bosses appearing now and then. Its director called it essentially an interactive movie, and the narrative revolves around Jennifer's traumatic childhood memories. Combat is almost entirely melee, using improvised weapons such as kitchen knives and pipes. Jennifer is timid, so her attacks are weak and short-ranged, and slipping past enemies is often the smarter move. Apart from a few bosses, the enemies are imps: skinny, doll-like creatures about the size of small children.

Each chapter covers one month of the story and opens with a homemade storybook tied to that chapter's plot. In every chapter Jennifer has to find a specific object to give to the Aristocracy. Early on she rescues a dog named Brown, who stays with her and responds to commands. You pick an item from the inventory and Brown sniffs it out, and you can also tell him to stay or call him back to her side. He cannot attack, but his growling can distract some imps and bosses, and if he is hurt badly enough he stops helping.

Most levels are built around puzzles, usually solved by using Brown's nose to track down objects that belong together, though some rely on markings found on walls. Healing items and tradable goods are mostly hidden until Brown uncovers them. Marbles, ribbons and similar items can be swapped with non-playable characters for food, rare items and weapons. The game is largely linear and your actions do not change the story, but exploring earns secret items, extra details and combat upgrades.
