Can you play Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories in your browser?

Partly. Play! gets Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories disc should you use?

The Play! tracker report used here covers one disc: the NTSC-U release, serial SLUS-21799, marked In-game. In tracker terms that means gameplay can be reached but major bugs prevent it from being playable. The last test was on July 24, 2018, on Windows 7 x64, so the result is old, and the tracker covers Play! in general rather than the browser build specifically.

The tester's notes say the menu loads with music and sound effects, but starting a new game often ends in a crash or an endless spinning-heart loading icon. Existing save data can be loaded, although the game is prone to hangs and crashes and has some visual problems, and in-game music and most sound effects are missing. The tester also remarked that another serial, SLPM-66676, appeared to have the same issues.

What testers reported for Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories

Notes from the volunteers who tested Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories on Play! and filed the tracker reports. They describe the emulator at the time of each test; newer builds may behave differently, and the browser version can perform worse than desktop.

How to play Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-21799) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories (PS2)

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories is the PlayStation 2 remake of Chain of Memories, a 2004 Game Boy Advance game that Square Enix made with Jupiter as the second entry in the Kingdom Hearts series. Wikipedia covers the original and the remake in one article. The story picks up straight after the first Kingdom Hearts and wraps up roughly a year before Kingdom Hearts II. Sora and his friends enter Castle Oblivion, a place that strips visitors of their memories, and clash with a new group of villains named Organization XIII.

The remake first appeared in Japan on March 29, 2007, packaged with Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+, and reached North America as a stand-alone title on December 2, 2008. Wikipedia says it never received a PS2 release in Europe or Australia. A Square Enix team in Osaka, the fifth Product Development Division, built it. Where the handheld original used 2D visuals, the remake has polygonal 3D battles and worlds, plus voice acting, a reworked soundtrack, and some new scenes and fights. The article adds that IGN placed it 92nd on its list of PS2 games.

How Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories plays

Chain of Memories blends a role-playing game with a collectible card game. Characters earn experience points that can raise maximum health and Card Points or teach new skills, and cards drive both story progress and combat. You travel across an isometric world map made of rooms. Enemies roam those rooms and chase you, and touching one starts a fight on a separate battle screen.

Rooms are not fixed. After winning battles you collect map cards and spend them on a process called room synthesis, building each room as you advance. The card you pick shapes the room: red cards influence how many enemies appear and what kind they are, green cards influence the power of your deck, and blue cards decide things like treasure chests and save points.

Battles run in real time, but every attack and action comes from playing a card. Each card carries a rank between zero and nine, and cards can be chained into three-card combos or used to break an enemy card. A zero-ranked card can break anything played before it, yet any other card can break it in turn. Card Points cap how big your deck can be. Sora and Riku play differently: Sora builds and stores three custom decks, while Riku uses a fixed deck that changes by world and can enter a dark mode once he earns enough dark points. Finishing Sora's story unlocks Riku's. The PS2 version keeps the card system and room synthesis mostly intact and adds the Reaction Command feature from Kingdom Hearts II.

Other ways to play Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories

Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories emulator FAQ

Is there a Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories website to play online?

We are not aware of an official way to play Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories online. What exists are browser-based PS2 emulators, such as Play!.js, that run a disc image of the game you own. We do not host or link to game files.

Do I need a PS2 BIOS to run Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories?

Not with Play!. It emulates the PS2 system software at a high level, so no BIOS file is required.

Which version of Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories has been tested in Play!?

The tracker lists the NTSC-U disc, SLUS-21799, as In-game, last tested in July 2018. The tester also mentioned a second serial, SLPM-66676, with the same problems. Wikipedia says the remake was never issued on PS2 in Europe or Australia, so there is no PAL disc to look for.

Is Re:Chain of Memories the same as the Game Boy Advance game?

It is a remake. The Game Boy Advance original came first, in 2004. The PS2 version keeps its card battles and room-building system largely the same but moves to 3D battles and worlds, adds voice acting and an improved soundtrack, and includes new cutscenes and battles.

Where does Re:Chain of Memories fit in the Kingdom Hearts series?

It is the second game in the series and a direct sequel to the first Kingdom Hearts. Its ending is set about a year before Kingdom Hearts II, and Wikipedia says it was developed to bridge the gap between those two games.

Can I save my progress in the browser?

Play!.js keeps save data only in memory while the page is open, so it is lost when you close or reload it. The tracker tester reported being able to load existing save data, but also saw hangs and crashes in-game, so treat saving as part of an experiment rather than a guarantee.

Who made Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories?

The original was developed by Square Enix and Jupiter, with Tetsuya Nomura directing and Yoko Shimomura composing. Wikipedia says the PS2 remake came from the fifth Product Development Division of Square Enix, based in Osaka, and was published by Square Enix.
