Can you play Haunting Ground in your browser?

Partly. Play! gets Haunting Ground into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Haunting Ground disc should you use?

The Play! tracker lists two discs, and both are marked In-game rather than Playable. The NTSC-U disc, serial SLUS-21075, was tested on May 4, 2019. The tester reported performance averaging about 30-40 after a recent update, but also a broken shadow problem, that the tester says Silent Hill 4 and some other games also have, which leaves the screen completely blurred, and a black screen if the resolution is changed during play.

The PAL disc, serial SLES-52877, was tested on March 28, 2018 and is described as showing garbled graphics in-game. Both issues carry the tracker's idledetection label and were last updated in April 2022. If you are choosing a disc, the NTSC-U report is newer and more detailed, but neither version is reported as Playable. The tracker covers Play! on all platforms, so browser results may be worse than these reports.

How to play Haunting Ground in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Haunting Ground. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-21075) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

Haunting Ground controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Haunting Ground (PS2)

Haunting Ground is a survival horror game that Capcom developed and published for PlayStation 2 in 2005. In Japan it carries the title Demento. You play Fiona Belli, a young woman who comes to in a castle dungeon after a car accident. She makes friends with a White Shepherd named Hewie, and the two explore the castle together while looking for a way out and for answers about the place and the people who live there.

The game resembles Capcom's earlier Clock Tower 3, and reviewers have described it as the Clock Tower series' spiritual successor, though Capcom never officially said so. The game was first shown under its Japanese name, Demento, during the Tokyo Game Show in September 2004. Japan received it on April 21, 2005, PAL regions followed on April 29, and North America got it on May 10. Reviews were mixed. Wikipedia says reviewers praised the graphics, presentation and its themes of vulnerability, but found the gameplay repetitive and predictable. A PlayStation 3 re-release appeared in Japan only, in April 2015.

How Haunting Ground plays

Fiona is a vulnerable lead. You steer her directly, run, backstep, crouch to hide, and kick or tackle when cornered, but sprinting, backstepping and tackling all drain stamina, and an exhausted Fiona slows or stops until an item or some rest restores her. Hiding spots help you slip away from pursuers, and certain locations let her counterattack, though some of those can be used only once.

The second half of the design is Hewie. He is not fully cooperative at the start, so you must earn his trust. You can order him to sniff out items, inspect suspicious spots, attack, or return to Fiona's side. Petting and feeding him build the bond and can heal him, scolding corrects him, and a "stand ready" order raises his attack power before a fight.

Enemies react to footsteps and other noises. In a dangerous moment Fiona can fall into panic, which blurs visibility, blocks the menu and sends her running on her own and stumbling into walls. Glowing orbs called Luminescents trigger that state and draw enemies in. Items heal Fiona or Hewie, damage enemies, or work as thrown objects and traps, and some are crafted in refining rooms. The game has several endings that depend on choices, such as whether Debilitas is spared and how well Fiona and Hewie get along.

Haunting Ground emulator FAQ

Is there a Haunting Ground website to play online?

We are not aware of an official way to play Haunting Ground online. What exists are browser-based PS2 emulators, such as Play!.js, that run a disc image of the game you own. We do not host or link to game files.

Do I need a PS2 BIOS to run Haunting Ground?

Not with Play!. It emulates the PS2 system software at a high level, so no BIOS file is required.

Which version of Haunting Ground works best in a browser emulator?

Neither is reported as Playable. The NTSC-U disc (SLUS-21075) is In-game with a newer, more detailed report that mentions a blurred screen. The PAL disc (SLES-52877) is In-game with garbled graphics. Browser results may be worse than these tracker reports.

Who made Haunting Ground?

Capcom developed and published it for PlayStation 2 in 2005. It was released in Japan under the title Demento, and Kazuhiro Tsuchiya is credited as its director in the infobox.

Is Haunting Ground a sequel to Clock Tower?

Not officially. Reviewers have framed it as a spiritual successor to Clock Tower and noted its many gameplay similarities with Clock Tower 3, but Wikipedia says Capcom never officially declared it so.

Who is Hewie in Haunting Ground?

Hewie is a White Shepherd who befriends Fiona and helps her explore the castle. The player gives him commands such as sniffing out items or attacking, and has to earn his trust over time.

Does Haunting Ground have multiple endings?

Yes. The ending depends on decisions made while playing, including whether the groundskeeper Debilitas survives and how good Hewie's relationship with Fiona is. After one completed playthrough, a surviving Debilitas also allows an early exit from the castle.

Can I save my progress in the browser?

In the browser version, saves are kept only in memory while the page is open, so they are lost when you close or reload it. The tracker notes for this game do not say anything about saving, and the reported graphical problems mean results may vary.
