Can you play Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII in your browser?
Partly. Play! gets Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII disc should you use?
The Play! tracker has one report for this game: the NTSC-U disc, serial SLUS-21419, listed as In-game rather than Playable. The tester last ran it on 27 February 2022, and the issue was last active on 28 February 2022. The notes describe it as very slow with high EE usage, plus visual issues with shadows when using Vulkan. The report also carries the idledetection label.
Nothing in the tracker covers a PAL or Japanese disc for this game, so there is no comparison to make. The Western discs and the Japanese original differ in content, since the online mode exists only in Japan, so a result for one disc should not be assumed for another. The tracker covers Play! on every platform, so a browser tab may do worse than reported.

About Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII (PS2)
Released in 2006 for the PlayStation 2, Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII was made and published by Square Enix, with extra development help from Monolith Soft. It belongs to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, a set of follow-up works built around the world of the 1997 original. The story picks up three years after that game and follows Vincent Valentine, who is hunted by Deepground, a shadowy organization hoping to wake a creature named Omega that could destroy the Planet.
It was the first shooter in the Final Fantasy series. Producer Yoshinori Kitase chose the genre partly because he loved first-person shooters and saw it as a challenge for the team, and role-playing elements were layered on top to keep series regulars interested. Japan received the game in January 2006, North America in August, and Europe in November. The Western versions changed several gameplay details, and Japan got a re-release with those changes in September 2008. Reviews were mixed: Metacritic lists 57 out of 100 from 51 reviews.

How Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII plays
Combat happens in real time from an over-the-shoulder view, similar to Resident Evil 4, and players may switch to a first-person view. The screen shows Vincent's hit points and magic points, the selected item, and a cross-hair for aiming. Defeated enemies give EXP. After each stage you can spend it on levels that raise Vincent's stats, or convert it into Gil, the currency used for items and weapon upgrades.
Equipment is simpler than in the original Final Fantasy VII: Vincent carries only a weapon, though customization can make it add to his armor rating and stats. There are three basic gun frames, Cerberus (a handgun), Hydra (a rifle) and Griffon (a machine gun), each fitted with a short, regular or long barrel. Longer barrels help with distant targets but slow Vincent down. Attachments include a sniper scope, charms that raise defense and lower weight, and Materia that enables magic shots at the cost of magic points. Ammunition capacity can also be upgraded.
Limit Breaks return in two forms. Galian Beast turns Vincent into a fast, strong creature for 30 seconds, while Chaos, his strongest form, only becomes available in the last stages. Modes differ by region. The Japanese release has an online mode and an Easy Mode; the Western releases dropped both and reworked the multiplayer missions into unlockable secret missions.

Which version of Dirge of Cerberus has been tested in Play!?
Only the NTSC-U disc, SLUS-21419, appears on the tracker, and its status is In-game, not Playable. The report from February 2022 describes it as very slow, with high EE usage and shadow glitches under Vulkan. Results in a browser may be lower than those desktop-oriented notes.
Who made Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII?
Square Enix developed and published it, with additional work from Monolith Soft. Yoshinori Kitase produced it, Tetsuya Nomura was the main character designer, and Masashi Hamauzu composed the soundtrack. The singer Gackt both wrote and sang the two theme songs.
Is Dirge of Cerberus part of a series?
It sits inside the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, a multimedia collection built around the world of the 1997 game, and inside the wider Final Fantasy series. Before Crisis, Advent Children and Crisis Core belong to the same Compilation. The story opens during the climax of the original game, then jumps ahead three years.
Did the Western releases have online play?
No. The online mode is only in the Japanese version. For the North American and European releases the developers removed online multiplayer and reworked its missions into unlockable secret missions, and they also removed the Easy Mode that the Japanese release included.
Can I save my progress in a browser?
In the browser version, saves are kept only in memory while the page is open, so they are lost when you close or reload it. The disc image itself stays in the browser and is not uploaded anywhere. Because this disc is only reported as In-game, it is worth testing saving yourself before relying on it.
