Play!: In-game
On the Play! emulator's compatibility tracker, the best result for Devil May Cry is "In-game" (NTSC-U, SLUS-20216).
Can you play Devil May Cry in your browser?
Partly. Play! gets Devil May Cry into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Devil May Cry disc should you use?
Two discs appear on the Play! tracker, and both are listed as In-game rather than Playable. The NTSC-U disc (SLUS-20216) was tested on 28 November 2021 and carries no written notes. The PAL disc (SLES-50358) was tested more recently, on 27 April 2024, and its notes say it hangs after a specific cutscene that follows a boss battle.
If you own one of these discs, the PAL report is the only one that describes a concrete problem, and that problem could stop progress partway through. The Japanese release has no report. The tracker covers Play! on every platform, so a browser tab may do worse than either entry suggests.
What testers reported for Devil May Cry
Notes from the volunteers who tested Devil May Cry on Play! and filed the tracker reports. They describe the emulator at the time of each test; newer builds may behave differently, and the browser version can perform worse than desktop.

How to play Devil May Cry in your browser
- Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Devil May Cry. We do not provide game files.
- If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-20216) has the best reported result.
- Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
- Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.
Devil May Cry controls in the browser emulator
Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.
| PS2 controller | Keyboard |
|---|---|
| D-pad | Arrow keys |
| Left analog stick | T / F / G / H (up / left / down / right) |
| Right analog stick | I / J / K / L |

About Devil May Cry (PS2)
Capcom developed and published Devil May Cry, a 2001 action-adventure title for the PlayStation 2. Capcom Production Studio 4 made it, with Hideki Kamiya directing. On a remote island, it follows Dante, a demon hunter whose business doubles as a vehicle for a lifelong vendetta against demons. Along the way he encounters Trish, who leads him toward a showdown with the demon lord Mundus, who caused the deaths of Dante's mother and brother.
The project began as an early version of Resident Evil 4. Producer Shinji Mikami then judged that a fast, stylish action game did not suit survival horror, and the work became a separate game. Its story loosely echoes Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. Japan received it in August 2001, North America in October 2001, and PAL regions in December 2001. Wikipedia reports critical acclaim and more than 2.16 million copies sold, and notes that the game launched a franchise.

How Devil May Cry plays
The game is divided into missions in which you fight many enemies, handle platforming and occasionally solve puzzles. Every mission earns a letter grade, from D up through C, B and A, with S at the top. The grade depends on completion time, the red orbs you collected (the currency dropped by foes, smashed objects and exploring), how stylish your combat was, item use and damage taken.
Style is tracked by an on-screen gauge that climbs as you land an unbroken string of varied attacks without being hit. It runs from Dull through Cool, Bravo and Absolute to Stylish. Repeating the same moves stalls it, and taking damage resets it. Taunting an enemy at close range can also help you keep your rating.
Devil Trigger lets Dante temporarily become a stronger demonic form. It typically raises strength and defense, slowly restores health and adds special attacks tied to the current weapon. A gauge limits it, and attacking enemies or taunting in normal form refills it. Away from combat, expect puzzles that require finding key items, optional platforming and exploration for hidden orbs, and Secret Missions, optional challenges in out-of-the-way spots that grant permanent power-ups.

Devil May Cry emulator FAQ
Is there a Devil May Cry website to play online?
We are not aware of an official way to play Devil May Cry online. What exists are browser-based PS2 emulators, such as Play!.js, that run a disc image of the game you own. We do not host or link to game files.
Do I need a PS2 BIOS to run Devil May Cry?
Not with Play!. It emulates the PS2 system software at a high level, so no BIOS file is required.
Which version of Devil May Cry works best in a browser emulator?
Neither disc is reported as Playable. The tracker lists both the NTSC-U disc (SLUS-20216) and the PAL disc (SLES-50358) as In-game. The PAL entry notes a hang after a specific cutscene following a boss battle, while the NTSC-U entry has no written notes.
Is Devil May Cry part of a series?
Yes. The sequel is Devil May Cry 2, and Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening is a prequel. Devil May Cry 4 reached the United States on February 5, 2008, on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. The franchise also includes novels and an anime series.
Why is Devil May Cry so difficult?
According to Wikipedia, director Hideki Kamiya made the difficulty deliberate, aimed at players who were used to lighter, casual games. Reviewers also noted the high difficulty, though one critic objected to it. Performance is graded per mission, and the style gauge rewards varied, damage-free combat.
Who made Devil May Cry?
Capcom developed and published it. Capcom Production Studio 4 was the developer, and within it a group called Team Little Devils did the work. Hideki Kamiya directed, Hiroyuki Kobayashi produced, and Noboru Sugimura helped write the scenario.
Can I save my progress in a browser?
In the browser version, saves are lost when you close or reload the page, and your disc image stays in the browser rather than being uploaded. The tracker entries for these discs do not mention saving, and both are only rated In-game, so it is worth testing saves yourself.
