Play!: In-game
On the Play! emulator's compatibility tracker, the best result for Dark Cloud 2 is "In-game" (PAL, SCES-51190).
Can you play Dark Cloud 2 in your browser?
Partly. Play! gets Dark Cloud 2 into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Dark Cloud 2 disc should you use?
The Play! tracker report used here covers one disc: the PAL release, serial SCES-51190, which the tracker titles Dark Cloud 2 even though Wikipedia says Europe received the game as Dark Chronicle. It is marked In-game, meaning gameplay can be reached but major bugs prevent it from being playable. The last test was on July 3, 2019, using Play! 0.30.
The tester reported that water looks psychedelic, as in the first Dark Cloud, that there is graphical glitching when the game is paused, and that the glitching gets worse when running around for the first time as the lead female character. No NTSC-U or NTSC-J disc is covered by the report used here, so there is nothing to compare against, and the tracker covers Play! in general rather than the browser build.

How to play Dark Cloud 2 in your browser
- Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Dark Cloud 2. We do not provide game files.
- If you have a choice of versions, the PAL release (SCES-51190) has the best reported result.

- Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.
Dark Cloud 2 controls in the browser emulator
Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)
Dark Cloud 2 is the North American name of Dark Chronicle, a 2002 action role-playing game from Level-5 that Sony Computer Entertainment published for the PlayStation 2. It reached Japan first and then arrived in English in 2003, and Japan and Europe know it by the Dark Chronicle title. It is the successor to Dark Cloud, sharing that game's basic mechanics while bringing new characters and a new plot.
You control two main characters, Max and Monica, who team up against Emperor Griffon, a ruler out to destroy the world. Time travel is central: the pair try to alter the past so the future turns out differently. Critics gave the game positive reviews, praising its graphics and its variety of gameplay styles compared with the first game, and the article says about 250,000 copies were sold in Japan in its first month. It also lists an emulated PlayStation 4 release in 2016.

How Dark Cloud 2 plays
Dark Chronicle plays as a third-person action RPG. You explore procedurally generated dungeons, fight monsters in real-time hack-and-slash combat, and collect items. For most of the game you switch between two heroes. Max's tools are a wrench for close combat and a gun for range, while Monica relies on a sword and a magic bracelet. Each also has a signature ability: Max can climb into the Ridepod, a mech-like vehicle you can customize, and Monica can turn into monsters.
Weapons level up rather than characters. A weapon gains absorption points as it is used and levels up automatically, and its Synthesis Points set how many attachments it can hold. Most items can be broken down into SynthSpheres and attached to raise specific stats. Weapons wear out and need repair: a broken one stays in your inventory but cannot be used until it is fixed, and it loses some of its accumulated experience. Characters themselves grow stronger only by consuming items that permanently raise health and defense.
Outside the dungeons, special items called Geostones are fed into a device named the Carpenterion, which converts them into plans for things you can build. In Georama mode, which resembles a city-building game, you place houses, trees, lights and rivers and fill buildings with villagers; meeting a village's conditions changes something in the future. Other activities include fishing, where you breed and train fish and enter competitions, an invention system built on photographing items, and a golf minigame called spheda.

Dark Cloud 2 emulator FAQ
Is there a Dark Cloud 2 website to play online?
We are not aware of an official way to play Dark Cloud 2 online. What exists are browser-based PS2 emulators, such as Play!.js, that run a disc image of the game you own. We do not host or link to game files.
Do I need a PS2 BIOS to run Dark Cloud 2?
Not with Play!. It emulates the PS2 system software at a high level, so no BIOS file is required.
Which version of Dark Cloud 2 has been tested in Play!?
The tracker report covers the PAL disc, SCES-51190, marked In-game and last tested on July 3, 2019. The tester noted psychedelic-looking water and graphical glitching. The report used here does not cover the North American or Japanese discs, so there is no comparison between versions.
Is Dark Cloud 2 the same game as Dark Chronicle?
Yes. Wikipedia says Dark Cloud 2 is the North American title, while Japan and Europe used Dark Chronicle. Sony announced the two titles at E3 in 2002, and the game came out in Japan in 2002 before arriving in English in 2003.
Do I need to play the first Dark Cloud before Dark Cloud 2?
Wikipedia calls it a successor that shares the first game's basic mechanics but has new characters and a new plot, so it is not presented as a direct continuation of the earlier story. Playing the first game is not described as a requirement.
Can I save my progress in the browser?
Play!.js keeps save data only in memory while the page is open, so it is lost when you close or reload it. The tracker report does not mention saving, so how reliably it works in the browser is untested.
Who made Dark Cloud 2?
Level-5 developed it and Sony Computer Entertainment published it. Akihiro Hino directed and wrote the game and also produced and helped design it, and Tomohito Nishiura composed the music, according to the Wikipedia infobox and article.
