Can you play Yakuza in your browser?

Yes, with a disc image you own. Play! reports Yakuza as fully playable, and Play! runs in a browser. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Yakuza disc should you use?

Only one Yakuza disc is listed on the Play! tracker: the North American release (SLUS-21348). It is reported as Playable, with the note fully playable with good performance, and its test date is 2023-07-11.

No PAL or Japanese discs have been tested, so there is nothing to compare. The tracker records results for Play! on all platforms, so a browser build, which the project calls only an experiment, may perform worse. If you are choosing a disc, the NTSC-U release is the only one with a report.

What testers reported for Yakuza

Notes from the volunteers who tested Yakuza on Play! and filed the tracker reports. They describe the emulator at the time of each test; newer builds may behave differently, and the browser version can perform worse than desktop.

How to play Yakuza in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Yakuza. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-21348) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

Yakuza controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Yakuza (PS2)

Yakuza is an action-adventure game that Sega made for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. It launched in Japan in December 2005 under the name Ryu ga Gotoku and reached North America and Europe in September 2006. The New Entertainment R&D Dept. at Sega developed it, with producer Toshihiro Nagoshi leading the project.

You play Kazuma Kiryu, a yakuza member jailed for ten years over a crime he never committed. Once out he learns that the underworld is hunting for 10 billion yen stolen from the Tojo clan. The action takes place in Kamurocho, a fictional district closely modeled on Tokyo's Kabukicho. The team studied hostess clubs for the story, and they built a new engine, though the combat drew on the design of Nagoshi's earlier game SpikeOut.

Wikipedia reports that Western reviewers were generally positive, with a Metacritic score of 75 out of 100, praising the story and city while criticizing controls and some mechanics. The PS2 version sold over one million copies, and its success led to the long-running franchise now known internationally as Like a Dragon.

How Yakuza plays

Yakuza is a third-person game set in an open-world city, though it uses fixed camera angles. You control Kiryu through Kamurocho. The map shows the straight route through the main story, and missions and side quests can be picked up around the city. There are role-playing elements: fights earn experience that raises Kiryu's attributes and strengthens his fighting abilities, including Heat actions that deal large damage. Fights also use quick time events.

Wikipedia says the game is built from three connected modes called Event, Adventure and Battle. In Adventure you walk the streets and meet foes in random Encounter Battles. Winning these earns cash that buys equipment and healing items from shops modeled on real-life stores, grouped under real company names. Cutscenes trigger after certain actions or after beating specific characters, and they introduce each chapter's goals.

Battle Mode includes the Underground Arena in the Purgatory area of Kamurocho. Minigames are scattered through Adventure Mode as arcade-style activities, such as a claw crane, batting cage, toba and pachislot, plus casino games covering baccarat, blackjack and roulette.
