Can you play Final Fantasy XII in your browser?

Yes, with a disc image you own. Play! reports Final Fantasy XII as fully playable, and Play! runs in a browser. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Final Fantasy XII disc should you use?

The Play! tracker lists four discs. The NTSC-U disc (SLUS-20963) and the English PAL disc (SLES-54354) are both listed as Playable. The PAL report, tested on July 26, 2026, calls it fully playable with good performance in general, but says large numbers of enemies or models on screen cause big drops, and the built-in 2x turbo speed makes the main CPU usage spike and frames skip. The NTSC-U report only notes OpenGL problems with the pause menu background and shadows.

The French PAL disc (SLES-54355) is listed as In-game, tested on November 25, 2021, and needs more testing. The Japanese International Zodiac Job System disc (SLPM-66750) is Playable, with the same notes as the English PAL report, tested on July 26, 2026. Results come from Play! on all platforms, so browser speed may be lower.

How to play Final Fantasy XII in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Final Fantasy XII. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-20963) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

Final Fantasy XII controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Final Fantasy XII (PS2)

Final Fantasy XII is a role-playing game that Square Enix both developed and released on the PlayStation 2. It was released in Japan on March 16, 2006, in North America on October 31, 2006, and in Europe on February 23, 2007. Wikipedia lists a set of changes from earlier entries: an open world, battles without a separate screen, a controllable camera, a programmable "gambit" system, a "license" system for abilities and equipment, and hunting side quests.

The setting is Ivalice, where two empires, Archadia and Rozarria, fight a war with no end in sight. Dalmasca, a small kingdom, sits between them, and when Archadia annexes it, Princess Ashelia starts a resistance movement. Along the way she meets Vaan, a young adventurer who wants to become a sky pirate with his own airship. Wikipedia reports that the game earned multiple Game of the Year honors, and PS2 sales passed six million by November 2009. A sequel, Revenant Wings, came out on the Nintendo DS in 2007, and a high-definition remaster of the expanded edition, The Zodiac Age, was released in July 2017.

How Final Fantasy XII plays

You control one character from a third-person view and, unlike earlier games in the series, can turn the camera freely with the right analog stick. Areas are drawn to scale instead of as miniature overworld maps, and you travel on foot, by Chocobo or by airship. Games are saved to a memory card at save crystals, and gate crystals also allow teleporting. Most enemies drop loot to sell instead of gil, and selling certain types unlocks bazaar offers.

This is the first main entry without random encounters, aside from the online Final Fantasy XI. Enemies are visible in the field, and you can fight or avoid them. Battles run in real time under the Active Dimension Battle system, and you can swap among the three party members whenever you like. The command menu offers Attack, Magicks, Technicks, Mist, Gambits and Items.

The gambit system lets you program each character's behavior with a target, an action and a priority. For example, a gambit can make a character heal any ally whose hit points fall below 70%. Direct commands from the player always take precedence. Characters grow through levels and also through the License Board, a grid of panels where spending license points unlocks magicks, technicks, equipment and stat boosts. Summoned Espers fight alongside the party, and each character can learn three Quickenings, which can be chained into Mist Chains.
