Which Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus disc should you use?
The Play! tracker lists two discs for Sly Cooper. The North American disc (SCUS-97198) is Playable, tested on 2025-03-23 on Windows 7 x64. The tester calls it fully playable, with performance acceptable for the most part but slower than it should be, and suspects a vector unit bottleneck because main CPU usage is never high.
The PAL disc, titled Sly Raccoon (SCES-50917), is In-game, tested on 2021-05-19 with no notes. For picking a disc, the American release has the more detailed and positive report. These results cover Play! on all platforms, so a browser may do worse.
What testers reported for Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Notes from the volunteers who tested Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus on Play! and filed the tracker reports. They describe the emulator at the time of each test; newer builds may behave differently, and the browser version can perform worse than desktop.
NTSC-U (SCUS-97198), tested March 23, 2025

About Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (PS2)
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a stealth platform game from Sucker Punch Productions, published by Sony Computer Entertainment. It was a PlayStation 2 release that reached North America on September 24, 2002 and Europe on January 17, 2003, where it is titled Sly Raccoon. It is the first game in the Sly Cooper series.
You play Sly Cooper, a raccoon thief, who works with Bentley the Turtle and Murray the Hippo. Their goal is to win back the missing pages of the Thievius Raccoonus from a rival gang called the Fiendish Five. The book collects the thieving techniques of Sly's ancestors. It was Sucker Punch's second game, after Rocket: Robot on Wheels for the Nintendo 64, and it spent three years in development.
Wikipedia reports that the game earned generally favorable reviews. Critics praised its toon-shaded look, which aimed for the feel of a hand-drawn animated film, and its easy controls. The most common complaint was that it was short. Three sequels followed, and the original PS2 version was re-released digitally on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in 2024.

How Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus plays
The game is a platformer seen from behind the character, with stealth elements. You work through the themed lairs of the Fiendish Five, each divided into smaller areas, avoiding security systems and patrolling guards. Sly attacks with his family cane but goes down in a single hit, so the game encourages sneaking and using the environment.
Special areas marked with blue sparkles represent Sly's thief senses. There you can trigger context actions such as shimmying along ledges, landing on poles or using the cane to grapple. Being spotted sounds an alarm, and you must destroy it, handle the alerted enemies or hide until it resets. The music adapts to the alert level.
Each sub-section hides clue bottles. Collecting them opens a safe holding a page from the book, which grants new moves such as a decoy or an explosive hat. Bosses also give moves needed later. Coins turn into lucky horseshoes that absorb hits. Minigames include driving levels, shooting sections that protect Murray and a hacking cyber-tank game, plus a rhythm-based boss fight. You can revisit levels to look for more coins and secret moves, then try a timed Master Sprint, which unlocks developer commentary.
