Can you play The Simpsons: Hit & Run in your browser?

Partly. Play! gets The Simpsons: Hit & Run into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which The Simpsons: Hit & Run disc should you use?

The Play! tracker has one report for this game, covering the PAL disc (SLES-51897). It is marked In-game and was tested on July 7, 2021. The only note is that it is in-game, but quite slow.

No NTSC-U disc has been tested on the tracker, even though the game was released in North America first, so there is no result to compare against. The report is also fairly old and has no detail about which parts of the game were tried. The tracker covers Play! on every platform, so a browser could be slower still, and the status is below Playable.

What testers reported for The Simpsons: Hit & Run

How to play The Simpsons: Hit & Run in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of The Simpsons: Hit & Run. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the PAL release (SLES-51897) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

The Simpsons: Hit & Run controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About The Simpsons: Hit & Run (PS2)

Radical Entertainment developed The Simpsons: Hit & Run, which Vivendi Universal Games released in 2003 as an action-adventure. The animated television show is its source, and Wikipedia lists it as the 22nd installment in The Simpsons video game series. It reached North America on September 16, 2003, on GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox, and a Windows port followed in November 2003.

The story follows the Simpson family and Apu as strange events pile up around Springfield: security cameras, black vans, crop circles and a new flavor of Buzz Cola that drives people mad. They uncover an alien plot by Kang and Kodos. The project started in late 2001 and was meant to follow Road Rage in spirit, and the team took heavy inspiration from the Grand Theft Auto series. Wikipedia reports positive reviews and over 3 million copies sold worldwide by June 2007.

How The Simpsons: Hit & Run plays

The game has seven levels spread over three maps, and every one has its own missions plus a sub-plot. You control one specific character per level: Homer and Bart (both twice), Lisa, Marge and Apu. On foot you can walk, jump, run and use three kinds of melee attack. For driving, you can hitchhike in civilian vehicles or use a phone booth to choose a car, and each level hides vehicles you can use if you find them.

Wikipedia describes the format as a sandbox that emphasizes driving, seen from a third-person view. Missions resemble those in Grand Theft Auto III: racing other characters, collecting items before a timer runs out, and wrecking cars. A circular hit and run meter in the bottom-right corner fills as you run people over or destroy objects. When it is full, police cars chase you for the duration.

Each level has collectibles. Coins drop when you break Buzz Cola vending machines or boxes, or wasp cameras, and they pay for new cars and outfits, some of which you need to progress. Each level hides seven trading cards, and collecting all seven unlocks a track in the Bonus Game racing minigame. Finding all 49 unlocks a special Itchy & Scratchy Show video. Your character cannot die, but injuries cost coins, and being caught during a hit and run costs a 50-coin fine.

Other ways to play The Simpsons: Hit & Run

The Simpsons: Hit & Run emulator FAQ

Is there a The Simpsons: Hit & Run website to play online?

We are not aware of an official way to play The Simpsons: Hit & Run online. What exists are browser-based PS2 emulators, such as Play!.js, that run a disc image of the game you own. We do not host or link to game files.

Do I need a PS2 BIOS to run The Simpsons: Hit & Run?

Not with Play!. It emulates the PS2 system software at a high level, so no BIOS file is required.

Which version of The Simpsons: Hit & Run works best in a browser emulator?

Only the PAL disc (SLES-51897) has a Play! tracker report. It is marked In-game, tested on July 7, 2021, with the note that it is quite slow. No NTSC-U disc has been reported, so there is nothing to compare it with.

Who made The Simpsons: Hit & Run?

Radical Entertainment developed it, and Vivendi Universal Games published it. The facts on this site add that Sierra Entertainment published it in PAL regions. Wikipedia says Radical had also made the earlier The Simpsons: Road Rage, released in 2001.

Is Hit & Run similar to Grand Theft Auto?

Wikipedia says the Grand Theft Auto series was a heavy influence on its design. It uses an open world and driving missions like Grand Theft Auto III, and several reviewers praised its parody of that game, though your character cannot die, so injuries cost coins instead.

Can I save my progress in the browser?

In the browser version, saves are kept only in memory while the page is open, so they are lost when you close or reload it. The tracker note for this game only mentions that it runs slowly.

How many playable characters are there?

Wikipedia lists five playable characters: Homer, Bart, Lisa, Marge and Apu. You control one specific character in each of the seven levels, with Homer and Bart each getting two levels, and you cannot freely swap between them.
