About Resident Evil Code: Veronica X (PS2)

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is the updated version of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, a survival horror game made by Capcom. The original appeared on Dreamcast in 2000, making it the first entry in the series to launch on hardware other than the original PlayStation. In 2001 Capcom released the revised Code: Veronica X on Dreamcast and PlayStation 2, adding new cutscenes that reveal more of the story.

When the story begins, three months have passed since Resident Evil 2. Claire Redfield and her brother Chris struggle through a viral outbreak that starts on a prison island, isolated in the Southern Ocean, and later moves to a research facility in Antarctica. Where earlier games used pre-rendered backgrounds, this one uses real-time 3D environments with a moving camera, and it leans on European gothic design instead of American horror settings. Wikipedia says the Dreamcast original received critical acclaim, while reviews of the PlayStation 2 release were mostly positive with some complaints that it was largely an unmodified port.

How Resident Evil Code: Veronica X plays

Code: Veronica plays like earlier Resident Evil games, with the series' signature controls, interface, puzzles, zombies and monsters. Because the backgrounds are real-time 3D, the camera follows, pans and zooms as you move through the environment. Cinematic CGI sequences and real-time cutscenes carry the story. The game is split between two characters: one half is played as Claire Redfield and the other half as her brother Chris.

Basic actions include running, attacking, and pushing or climbing objects. The status screen shows collected items, which can be examined for puzzle clues, and some can be equipped. It also holds a map and a file menu, and every note you find is saved there because notes can be needed for puzzles. Inventory space is limited, so other items go into storage boxes placed around the game.

Herbs restore health and become more effective when combined. Too much damage means a game over and a return to the last save point, and the death of a partner also ends the game. Some weapons suit certain enemies better, since some enemies are weak to fire or acid. After you clear the main game once, a Battle Mode unlocks. It is a minigame with infinite ammo and set locations from the main game, where you can also play as Steve Burnside, Albert Wesker or a Claire in a new outfit.
