Can you play Metal Gear Solid 3 in your browser?

Partly. Play! gets Metal Gear Solid 3 into gameplay, but the tracker lists major bugs that prevent playing it through. Use our browser emulator. Keep in mind that the tracker covers Play! on every platform, and its browser version is described by the project as an experiment, so results in a browser can be worse than on a desktop.

Which Metal Gear Solid 3 disc should you use?

The Play! tracker has six entries for this game, and none is marked Playable. The NTSC-U disc (SLUS-20915) has two reports. One is In-game, tested on May 16, 2021, with minor visual issues and saving and loading working properly. How to play Metal Gear Solid 3 in your browser

  1. Make a disc image (for example an ISO) from your own copy of Metal Gear Solid 3. We do not provide game files.
  2. If you have a choice of versions, the NTSC-U release (SLUS-20915) has the best reported result.
  3. Open our browser emulator in a recent version of Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Pick your disc image. Play!.js reads the file locally inside your browser (as its source code shows); it is not uploaded.

Metal Gear Solid 3 controls in the browser emulator

Play!.js is played with the keyboard. Its default layout maps the PS2 controller like this; the browser build sets up no gamepad bindings by default. Click the game screen once before you start: the emulator listens for key presses on its game screen, so keys only register while it has focus.

About Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is an action-adventure stealth game released on PlayStation 2 in 2004. Konami developed and published it, and Hideo Kojima wrote, produced and directed it. It is the fifth mainline Metal Gear game and the first in chronological order. Set in 1964, the story follows Naked Snake, a FOX operative who must rescue the rocket scientist Nikolai Sokolov, sabotage a superweapon named the Shagohod, and kill the Boss, the former mentor who defected.

Where earlier games were mostly urban, this one moves to a 1960s Soviet jungle. Wikipedia says that setting brought new mechanics: camouflage, a close quarters combat system, a stamina meter that you refill by eating scavenged food, plus a system for injuries and their treatment. Kojima moved development to PlayStation 2 after first planning the game for PlayStation 3. Critics responded with acclaim, praising the narrative, characters, survival elements and graphics, while reactions to some new mechanics and the camera were more mixed. An expanded edition, Subsistence, followed in 2005 and 2006, adding a third-person camera.

How Metal Gear Solid 3 plays

As in earlier Metal Gear Solid games, you guide Snake through hostile territory without being seen. His arms run from handguns at one end to rocket-propelled grenades at the other, but the emphasis is on avoiding fights. Gadgets help, including motion detectors and the series' trademark cardboard box. Two-thirds of the game takes place outdoors in a tropical forest, so using the terrain, such as climbing trees or hiding in tall grass, is often the key. The old advanced radar was replaced by a simple motion detector and sonar.

A camouflage index shows how exposed Snake is, from negative values when he is highly visible up to 100 percent when he is completely invisible to the enemy. To reduce visibility you swap uniforms and face paint to match the surroundings, for instance a bark pattern against a tree. Disguises such as a fake gavial head, meant for water, and a monkey mask can be used as well.

Close quarters combat refines the series' hand-to-hand system. While unarmed or holding a one-handed weapon, Snake can grab a guard and then choke him unconscious, throw him, cut his throat or interrogate him at knifepoint; context, button pressure and analog stick movement decide which action happens. Injuries are tracked across the whole body: a long fall might fracture a leg and lower maximum life until it heals or is treated with a splint and bandage. A stamina gauge keeps draining, so Snake must eat; food can rot, and rotten food can cause a stomachache. The PS2 version also includes a minigame, Snake vs. Monkey.

Metal Gear Solid 3 emulator FAQ

Is there a Metal Gear Solid 3 website to play online?

We are not aware of an official way to play Metal Gear Solid 3 online. What exists are browser-based PS2 emulators, such as Play!.js, that run a disc image of the game you own. We do not host or link to game files.

Do I need a PS2 BIOS to run Metal Gear Solid 3?

Not with Play!. It emulates the PS2 system software at a high level, so no BIOS file is required.

Which version of Metal Gear Solid 3 works best in a browser emulator?

No tested disc is marked Playable on the Play! tracker. The NTSC-U disc (SLUS-20915), the PAL disc (SLES-82013) and all three Subsistence discs are In-game, meaning gameplay is reachable but major bugs prevent playability. An older iPhone report for SLUS-20915 only reached the intro.

It is an expanded edition. Japan got it in 2005, and 2006 brought releases to North America, Europe and Australia. Wikipedia says the main additions were a third-person camera for the main game and Metal Gear Online, a multiplayer component.

Do saves work in Metal Gear Solid 3 on Play!?
